Karen Kenter's Korner

My voluntary work with Rice for Cambodia took me to Siem Reap last week. Cambodia is such a wonderful place I never get tired of showing new and return travellers the amazing Angkor Wat and introduce them to the wonderful Cambodian smile. We stayed at the Shinta Mani Shack where the welcome for my guests and I is so heartfelt and warm, it keeps us coming back. Should you be interested in Rice for Cambodia, click here to read more.

With our theme in this newsletter being around the USA, I myself have family in the USA and as such have also added many trips to my travel diary. The special airfare is just released for a limited time.

Hobbies and interests are a great reason to travel. One of my hobbies is quilting; and I attended the amazing Houston quilt show last November. The Texan hospitality is truly unique, the southern accent musical and the food so delicious (although not on my diet!).
John flew in to San Francisco and from there we drove through Yosemite National Park to the incredible Death Valley. The scenery was diverse (Snow caps, Blue jays, Coyotes, Salt Plains) and a jet fighter zooming through a canyon made for one for the most unique drives we have ever done. We circled around back into L.A. to do the things previously missed (Warner Brothers studios, Laurel Canyon, the Hollywood sign, Huntington beach, Balboa Island) discovering just how much there is to see.
Quilt Show Tour | April 2019
I am taking a tour to the Southern states of America in April 2019 to experience a Quilt Show, plus 9 days in the Mississippi Delta and finishing off with 5 days at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. If this is something you may like to join in part or all please let me know.
My team has a wealth of personal knowledge, that is constantly updated through our professional development program. Your travel dreams in their hands will ensure you won’t miss a thing.

Thank you for being part of The World @ Braeside Travel.

Stacey Baker's Memories of Antelope Canyon

In April and May I hired a car and headed out to cover 11 National and State Parks in America. Started in Las Vegas I traveled as far North as Yellowstone and west through Lake Tahoe.

Antelope Canyon is in Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park. It consists of 2 canyons -lower and upper.  The lower Canyon is entered via steep wooden steps carved into the side of the wall, while the Upper Canyon is accessed via a winding path. Safe to say (for those of you who know me well), I did the Upper Canyon!  As Antelope Canyon is on tribal land, the only way to explore it is in a tour group. I did the midday tour, and the sun shining through the crevices in the canyon walls showed an amazing display of colours - ranging from purple and blue through to red and orange.

Along the route I stopped at Moab to see three parks (Archers National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Canyon State Park) and do the beautiful scenic drive along the Colorado River. This Moab gem is dotted with lots of picnic areas to just sit and observe nature. This truly beautiful area is well known with mountain bikers, and where the True Story of movie 127 hours was set.

Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole are the gate way to Yellowstone National Park. This scenic town is a lovely place to stop at on your way through with restaurants, shops and galleries for everyone to find something to enjoy.

In total I covered 5600km of road. There is still so much of America I have not covered in my past 20 trips, however Antelope Canyon certainly made an impression. It was a fantastic way to see the real natural beauty of America.

Lisa Madsen Top 5 Tips for Vegas
On a recent trip to Vegas, I had the opportunity to see a different side of the town. There is so much more to do than visit the Casino's and shop. I was only there for 4 days, however I saw a variety of new attractions and experiences.

Here are my top five interesting and fun things to do in Las Vegas:
  • Mob museum – offers interactive exhibits and one of a kind Mob and law enforcement artefacts, located in a 1933 former court house. There is a hidden Speakeasy in the basement - be sure to check out their Facebook page for the secret password to enter.
  • Zipline down Fremont street - either in an sitting position which goes half way down Fremont street or fly like super heroes and go down the length of Fremont street.
  • Container park – a Sustainable (made from old shipping containers) shopping area in downtown Vegas, shops, eateries and entertainment, comes alive at night.
  • Premium outlets – (north) – grab a bargain at the outlet shops spread over 40acres so allow plenty of time to visit and get the most out of your shopping.
  • Pink Jeep – Red rock Canyon tour – if you are short on time and can’t get out to the Grand Canyon visit Red rock canyon only an hour from Vegas. The beautiful beautiful colours and walking tracks make a hike interesting.

Jo Rickard Say Aloha In Hawaii
Honolulu is as popular as ever and after a recent trip back there, it is easy to see why. Beautiful beaches, warm weather and so much to see and do.  Getting around the Island is simple, with great tram ways and bus lines. Hiring a car is also agreat way to explore the North Shore of the Island.

First on my list is Waikiki Beach. It is an absolute highlight for me, I could sit and people watch all day. Shopping in Honolulu is undoubtedly one of the islands biggest attractions with everything from factory outlets to designer boutiques. Some of my favourites include Waikele Premium Outlets, the International Market Place, Ala Moana Centre and the Royal Hawaiian Centre. Head to T Galleria to stock up on duty free goods and visit the elegant Waikiki Beach Walk and Luxury Row at 2100 Kalakaua Ave.

Waikiki buzzes day and night and is renowned for its beachfront resorts, live entertainment and many dining options. The food is amazing and the  variety on offer is fantastic – often there is too much to choose from! You might like to do as I did and try a traditional Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Centre. Here you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local food and culture and maybe even try the Hula, great fun!

There are many tour options available across all islands. If you are interested in history then the USS Arizona & Pearl Harbour tour is a must. You can visit the USS Arizona Memorial and the Pearl Harbour Visitor Centre. The Kualoa Ranch tour has been used on numerous movies and tv shows including Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates and Lost.

Honolulu is an amazing destination, and whether you are on your own, with family or friends, it ticks all the boxes on so many levels and now that we are in the midst of our freezing Melbourne winter, I wish I was back on Waikiki Beach now!
